Arthur Getz was one of the designers who gave The New Yorker its true identity in the 1940s and 1950s, and he designed 213 covers until 1988. The cover of October 5, 1957 reveals a parking lot attendant, reading in a quiet, balanced position on his chair, while at the end of the street the party is in full swing for the city that never sleeps.
