A drawer of urban unrest, Jean-Jacques Sempé also knows how to take a tender look at rural life, always oscillating between country caricature and the poetry of nature. This rural bicycle scene takes a comic turn here with the curious resemblance between the profile of the cyclist and that of the gallinaceous. A gentle way of life without a spat... proof that happiness can sometimes be in the meadow.

Garden party in the true sense of the word: Sempé literally inserts the crowd in the heart of the garden. Details abound, summer is declined on outfits of multiple colors, like flowers between the branches of trees. One can hear the hubbub, the laughter and the small talk, the clinking of cups and the rustling of the crowd, under the mischievous stroke of the famous cartoonist, assiduous chronicler of Parisian meetings.

As a greeting to the sun on Sempé’s August 11, 1997 New Yorker cover. The simplicity of the infinite landscape, the gradations of the dawn sky, the thin strips of foam and the pastel yellow sand beach, make the little gymnast in red shorts who stands on his head, a real ray of sunshine. 

Like master, like dog? Jean-Jacques Sempé likes to represent his characters to their faithful companions, to highlight their amusing resemblance revealing a tender affinity. The result is a series of atypical and endearing duets, brought together in scenes of everyday life with a complicity that never fails to impress..

How beautiful Paris is at night! Jean-Jacques Sempé delicately cuts it into quarters, stretching its streets to the horizon. The Eiffel Tower watches, golden, over the city that darkens. In the artist eye of Sempé, master of detail, the gleams in the windows encrust themselves under the roofs of television antennas, the light of the headlights reveals the passers-by; the street lamps and signs cut out the coming night.

Classical dance and ballet are among Sempé's recurring themes. On this March 23, 1987 cover, a young ballerina presents her steps under the keen eye of her teacher. With her arm raised, she looks like a statue of liberty, while the shadows of her classmates draw a reflection close to that of the Skyline in the Hudson River. 

Only Sempé knows how to combine, in a drawing, the immense and the infinitesimal with malice. The energy of childhood is shaken in a large gymnasium, nose in the air, from vertical ropes to horizontal bars and beams. We perceive the effort, the doubt, the curiosity and the laughter, the danger and the boldness. The burlesque and the humor are deployed in all directions.
